DAY 83 (1 OF 2) – MERCADO CENTRAL, SANTIAGO, CHILE

The Mercado Central in the Chilean capital is a world-famous fish market.  It was Sunday early afternoon when we visited the bustling market.  The time was a little late for buying seafood from fishmongers.  Most visitors were actually coming for a seafood lunch.  Avoiding the more touristy restaurants in the middle of the market, we sat down at one of the few tables in a small stall at the edge of the market for lunch.  We ordered erizo (sea urchin), a seafood soup, and a special seafood stew.  Price was fair, and quality was decent.  Some came specifically for king crabs, which were displayed at almost all restaurants in the market.

DAY 71 (5 OF 5) – KAUPE RESTAURANT, USHUAIA, TIERRA DEL FUEGO, ARGENTINA

With a nice view overlooking the harbour, Kaupe Restaurant is perhaps the best place in town to taste the seafood of Ushuaia.  We had scallops, king crab, Patagonian sea bass, and octopus from Beagle Channel.  ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

DAY 70 (4 OF 4) – KALMA RESTO, USHUAIA, TIERRA DEL FUEGO, ARGENTINA

For dinner, we went to Kalma Resto.  Recommended by Jorge, the chef, we ordered salmon sashimi and king crab for starters, and lamb and hake for main dishes.   Both the food and service were excellent.

DAY 69 (2 OF 3) – ARRIVAL, USHUAIA, TIERRA DEL FUEGO, ARGENTINA

The 10-hour bus ride was quite exhausting, but it definitely worth the effort to come to Ushuaia, where many tourists begin their Antarctica journey.  Ushuaia is a peaceful port city overlooking the Beagle Channel and the snow-capped mountains beyond.  It was 8pm when we arrived at the bus terminal right by the port.  At the port, there were several tourist boats, an Antarctic ship, a cargo ship, two military ships, and a passenger cruise ship.  The air was cool and the sea was calm, such a welcoming evening to this “end of the world” city!  We strolled along the main street and found several touristy restaurants with live king crabs displayed at their shop front.
