DAY 56 (2 OF 3) – WOODEN TEJUELAS HOUSES, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

The wooden houses, especially the ones cladded with tejuelas (Chilote wood shingles), have a distinct character that fit perfectly with the windswept and lush landscape of Chiloe.  For two hundred years, Chiloe Island was isolated from the rest of the Spanish colonies in South America, while the coastal mainland was still under the control of the native Mapuche people.  Provisions were shipped to Chiloe from Peru only once a year.  As a result, Chilote people had developed their distinct culture and building techniques heavily relied on local timber.

DAY 56 (1 OF 3) – PALAFITOS, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

Marked as national historical monuments, the palafitos are unique architecture of Chiloe.  From street level, palafitos look like normal houses, but at the backside, they are projected over the water with stilt supports.  Many palafitos have decks at the backside used as pier for boats during high tides.  Castro offers some of the best examples of palafitos on the entire island.

DAY 55 (4 OF 4) – IGLESIA SAN FRANCISCO, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

Completed in 1912, Iglesia San Francisco de Castro was the first UNESCO church we visited on Chiloe Island. The dramatic colours of the exterior and the varnished-wood interior were both spectacular.

DAY 55 (3 OF 4) – TIDE, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

One of the first things we noticed when we arrived in Castro was the tide.  The amplitude of the tide varies slightly each day, but the timing of the change usually comes every 6 to 7 hours.
