ultramarinus – beyond the sea

Day 51 to 60

DAY 57 (1 OF 2) – PARQUE NACIONAL CHILOE, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

On the wild west coast of Chiloe along the Pacific coast lie the least number of villages, but instead, two of the most important parks on the island: Parque Tantauco and Parque Nacional Chiloe.  While Tantauco can only be appreciated by a weeklong trek staying at huts along the way, Parque Nacional Chiloe offers some good short hikes in the coastal forests and beaches.  From Castro, we took a minibus to the village of Cucao, where the park entrance was located.  We did some easy trails including Sendero El Tepual and Sendero Dunas de Cucao.

DAY 56 (3 OF 3) – ACHAO, ISLA QUINCHAO, CHILE

In the afternoon, we decided to visit the village of Achao, a fishing village on the nearby Isla Quinchao.  From Dalcahue on Chiloe, it was only a short ferry ride to Isla Quinchao.  Achao is a quiet fishing village with a pier, market, and an UNESCO World Heritage listed Iglesia Santa Maria de Loreto.  The church was closed when we were there.  We could only see appreciate its wooden exterior.  A group of school students were practicing choir at the church entrance.

DAY 56 (2 OF 3) – WOODEN TEJUELAS HOUSES, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

The wooden houses, especially the ones cladded with tejuelas (Chilote wood shingles), have a distinct character that fit perfectly with the windswept and lush landscape of Chiloe.  For two hundred years, Chiloe Island was isolated from the rest of the Spanish colonies in South America, while the coastal mainland was still under the control of the native Mapuche people.  Provisions were shipped to Chiloe from Peru only once a year.  As a result, Chilote people had developed their distinct culture and building techniques heavily relied on local timber.

DAY 56 (1 OF 3) – PALAFITOS, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

Marked as national historical monuments, the palafitos are unique architecture of Chiloe.  From street level, palafitos look like normal houses, but at the backside, they are projected over the water with stilt supports.  Many palafitos have decks at the backside used as pier for boats during high tides.  Castro offers some of the best examples of palafitos on the entire island.

DAY 55 (4 OF 4) – IGLESIA SAN FRANCISCO, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

Completed in 1912, Iglesia San Francisco de Castro was the first UNESCO church we visited on Chiloe Island. The dramatic colours of the exterior and the varnished-wood interior were both spectacular.

DAY 55 (3 OF 4) – TIDE, CASTRO, CHILOE ISLAND, CHILE

One of the first things we noticed when we arrived in Castro was the tide.  The amplitude of the tide varies slightly each day, but the timing of the change usually comes every 6 to 7 hours.

DAY 55 (2 OF 4) – Chacao Channel, Chiloe, Chile

Once we stepped out of Puerto Montt Airport, we took a deep breath of the fresh and moist spring air.  After days on the highlands and in the desert, now we could finally smell the grass and trees and the moisture in the soil.  The sky was grey with a bit of light rain.  We took a bus from the airport to the bus terminal in Puerto Montt’s city centre, and from there, we took another bus for Castro on Isla Chiloe.  During the 4-hour bus journey, we glued our eyes to the window, and were delighted to see the lush green scenery and fishing villages dotted along the coast.  At Chacao Channel, our bus drove onto the car ferry to cross the straight.  Once on the ferry, we immediately went out of the bus, climbed onto the ferry’s upper deck to watch the ocean.
